I can't believe how fast the time has gone by. 2008 is here.... and I've been in Nicaragua for 2 and a half weeks now. It's going excellently. A lot better than I was expecting, actually. The first 2 days were definately a rough patch.... but I'm totally past it now. It was pretty interesting readjusting to Nica lifestyle.... I got pretty stinkin spoiled by my 20 minute steaming hot showers and.... flushing toilets. hahaha No, no... I'm just kidding.... well, not really.
So I'm somewhat settled down in the home of Roberto and Adriana Avellan, a brother & sister in my congregation. They have an extra room in their house, that I'm staying in for the time being, until I can find my own place. It's a pretty comfortable place, minus the cold showers, but I pretty much refuse to take one, even IF there was water. (today has made the 5th consecutive day we haven't had running water) Normally I have to heat my water on the stove, when I want a shower, and pour it over my head. But the process of heating the water (as opposed to not heating it) is totally worth it because even though the house is closed up, there are huge gaps between the wall and the tin roof, and the very very strong wind that El Crucero is experiencing right now sends a breeze right into the bathroom. Definately not pleasant when you're wet! Multiply that by 10 if the water's already cold. And YOU thought Nicaragua was tropical, close to the ecuador, and HOT, HOT, HOT. Well, you are wrong, wrong, wrong! Of course, there are places that are quite hot and sticky.... and I admit, most of Nicaragua is.... but somehow I ended up in like the coldest spot this side of the country. Go figure. But, don't get me wrong.... I'm sure all you northeners (pretty much anyone north of Virginia) will find El Crucero's weather like a pleasant springtime. I on the other hand, have blood thinner than water, and I get made fun of (even by the Nicaraguan's) for my constant goosebumps! If you come to visit, bring a sweater!!!
While I was in Virginia, I saw some old friends... one of them being Tika Talbott, who connected me with Kelly Davis & Ashley Shell who had made plans to visit some friends here in Nicaragua. So just a few days after I arrived in Nicaragua, the girls came to stay with me for a week and a half. We had a great time together... lots of service, some sight-seeing, and tons of experiences. I know those girls will write a book about all the stuff they saw and that happened while they were here. It was good fun. I was really happy to have the visitors, I love being able to play tour guide, and it's cool to experience the 'first time in Nicaragua' all over again with every new person. ;o) I don't think I'll ever get tired of it.
While they were here we went to the Nicaraguan Sign Language Congregation in Managua. Now THAT was cool!! Since I've known American Sign Language for some time now, I've been thinking that I should probably learn Nica Sign while I'm here. Well, we got our first taste of it... and it was GREAT. They have 2 sign language congregations... good attendance, and I was so surprised at how much I understood!! It was really exciting. I even got up the guts to comment, even though I didn't get called on... but Kelly did, and everyone understood! It was excellent. Now I have to see how many languages I can learn at the same time!
In the last District Convention in Queretaro, Mexico I met a sister who said she may come to Nicaragua to visit some friends. Well, she came and last night we met up at the Managua English Congregation's service meeting. This was my first time visiting the English hall and it was sooooo nice to hear a meeting I could understand!! I was s-o-a-k-i-n-g it up! Over the last 8 months I've come to know a number of people from the English hall, Claudio, Javen, Jared, David, and Maria for example... but funny thing was I haven't ever seen them all together, so it was like whoa I can't believe how many people I know in this hall! I know a lot of people who will be visiting me will want to go to some English meetings, soooo for sure I'll be back soon. Jared's family was visiting Nica for the first time, so it was fun talking to them and hearing their stories of the first few days here... including the door handle coming off of the hotel room leaving them stuck inside.... lukewarm water showers... and the general shock at the chaos of driving in this country. But it was awesome to see how supportive they were, and even though it was new and a bit shocking for them, they still were enjoying it.
