March....allllll summed up!

Hello again! Sorry about the lack of posts in March. I really can't remember a month when I was that busy! I'll start with the end of February, the last time you heard from me...
Click the title above to read my stories about my big move and the memorial 2008 here in Nicaragua!

April... ALLLLLL SUMMED UP!

Filled with fun, surprises, and not so fun stuff. The first two weeks of April went by haphazardly. I was busy getting ready for my upcoming trip to the USA.....

I've reached my goal of 15,342 studies!

I may have mentioned this before... the first time that I came to Nicaragua, I was so excited about the prospect of having 15 bible studies that that became my main goal. Get as many studies as possible. It was fun, and I did have plenty of studies... but I also felt like I was so busy with these people but sometimes they didn't appreciate what I'd go through to have a study with them. First I'd have to study in English, then in Spanish, then I'd make notes on special points that I'd want to bring up and figure out how to say it in spanish, then I'd go to the study, often a lot of walking, or at least bus fare, just to find that they're not there... they had something to do, or whatever. So I'd reschedule the appointment, and to keep everything fresh in my head, I'd do it all over again the night before the next study. So much work!!

Well, this time I decided a different approach. When I went to visit Guatemala, I remember meeting a special pioneer sister. I asked her how many studies she had, and her answer was...

Next Time Pack a Lunch!

My full Friday of service has been a VERY interesting experience. The service have been amazing.... from an adventerous standpoint its been fun to ride the bus to the middle of nowhere and trek thru the little communities to our studies. I'd never ever before pictured myself living this kind of life...

The New House

I've been SOOOO crazy busy here. There's a brother named Lars (from Canada) who will soon be moving to El Crucero. He found a house for rent before I arrived and signed the contract on it.... But the problem turned up when he was accepted for a surgery that he had applied for in Canada. He's supposed to be leaving for Canada the same week (this week) that he was supposed to move in the new house. So, since I still don't have my own place yet, he called me and asked if I would like to live in his house, take care of it while I'm gone, and that will buy me some extra time to keep searching for my own house and in the meantime I can enjoy his excellent furniture.....

Nicaraguan Ciestas

Afternoon naps must be one of the best things in the world! When I lived in the states, I rarely had the time for a nap... or if I did, I simply didn't take one. Since I've lived in Latin America, naps are a normal, and required part of daily life......

Pochomil Beach

While Ashley and Kelly were here, we definately had some interesting things happen. They got a good taste of crazy Nica life. The adventurous
shake-your-head-because-there's-simply-nothing-else-you-can-do life. On Thursday we decided to go to the beach... We'd been pretty busy with preaching and studing all week... and then it was time to relax! Everything started out normal enough until... *click*, we walked out the front door and closed it behind us. Ashley turned the key in the lock and it completely jammed.
It wouldn't turn, it wouldn't come out. It was completely and totally stuck....

The Beginning of a New Year

I can't believe how fast the time has gone by. 2008 is here.... and I've been in Nicaragua for 2 and a half weeks now. It's going excellently. A lot better than I was expecting, actually. The first 2 days were definately a rough patch.... but I'm totally past it now. It was pretty interesting readjusting to Nica lifestyle.... I got pretty stinkin spoiled by my 20 minute steaming hot showers and.... flushing toilets. hahaha No, no... I'm just kidding.... well, not really.

So I'm somewhat settled down in the home of Roberto and Adriana Avellan, a brother & sister in my congregation. They have an extra room in their house, that I'm staying in for the time being, until I can find my own place.....

Adventure, Here I Come!!

I DID IT!!!

I can´t believe it... haha. I´m here, I made it. Back in Nicaragua! I arrived Wednesday and got picked up from the airport and brought right to El Crucero. Doorstop service. I can´t really explain all the things that were going through my head as I was heading up the long winding road to El Crucero. How alone I was about to be.... Maybe I could get a dog? or a piglet? Pao and I wanted a baby chick before, but she wanted to eat it after it grew up, and I wasn´t down with that. I think a chicken would be safe now....

5:00AM at the Airport

Well, I'm sitting here at the Charlotte Airport. Huddled in the corner soaking up the last tidbit of broadband that I can. Withdrawl starts in 30 minutes.

The airport is relatively empty at this time in the morning. The roads were also very clear. Who gets up at 3:30 in the morning to get to the airport? Perhaps a crazy person.... so then what do you call someone who didn't go to sleep at all??

That's right, I stayed up all night. And now I sit here, looking at my airplane, contemplating the level of sanity that I posess, and the very uncertian and quite intimidating turn my life is about to take.....

El Crucero

El Crucero. We arrived on a school bus stuffed full of witnesses who were all riding back from the convention together. The town of El Crucero is about 30 minutes away from the outskirts of Managua. It's far enough away so we feel safe here. The town is quite small. I think there are technically a lot of people who live in the town, but there really isn't much of anything available here as far as stores, resteraunts, etc... There are 2 little tiendas (stores) the size of a small bedroom that are basically are INSIDE the owner's house and they just sell chips, sodas, deoderant, toothpaste, and chicklets.

There is a small "hotel" if you would call it that....

Nicaragua Life

Wow, After all this time. All this planning, i can't believe we actually accomplished this! It's really pretty amazing! We arrived safely into San Jose, Costa Rica and our friend Dan arranged for us to have a place to stay with some friends in the english congregation down there. The past week getting ready to leave had been very exhausting so we just spent a day trying to relax and recover and it was welcome! Costa Rica is so beautful! Around 12:30 we decided to walk to a nearby mall to get some lunch. It was a bit of a walk (and our first day completely without transportation!) so we started out just going for a relaxing little stroll. About halfway there, a big fat drop of water splashed on my forehead. I looked up and instantly I remembered! "Paola! What time is it???" "1:10, why?" "It's after 1! It's going to rain!" Costa Rica is so cool... it's like clockwork, everyday after 1pm it rains.....

Bye Bye John & Jeanna, Hello Mike & Jared

The time has come to say goodbye to John and Jeanna. Wahhh! We had such a great time with them. They really changed the dynamics of this trip. I hope they enjoyed coming as much as we enjoyed having them......

Getting Ready

Getting ready for this trip has been fun.... very stressful... but exciting. Who leaves for a month long trip with only 6 days notice?? hehe.. But that's quite alright. At least I'm going. It's sad too because I feel like I have to say goodbye to everyone... even though I know I'll be back in just 30 days. But I know that everyone wants to see us and wish us a nice trip before we take off, so it's been nice......

Summer in Cancun

I never, ever, in my life, thought I'd see the day when I welcomed a cold shower. I'm such a baby. The second cold water touches my skin, instantaniously every pore closes up, every inch is covered in goose bumps, and I go into a mild shock, gasping for air....
It doesn't matter where I live.... Massachusettes, Virginia, Mexico. I still want a shower with hot water.... until now. Last week, I ran out of gas for my hot water heater, and I have not had even a tiny urge to spend the money to fill it back up. Cold water, hallelujah! Well, I do have to say, however, it's not exactly COLD water. Considering the sun rises around 6am and by the time I take my shower around 8 or 9, the burning ball of fire that is in the sky heats the water up rather quickly even if the water could reasonably "cool down" when the normal evening temperature hits a low of about 85*f. That's right, people. It's officially in Cancun... and getting hotter.

Things have been very busy lately... however it doesn't really feel like I'm getting that much done! There is so much to do with my return visits and studies that I'm almost overwealmed. We've been working on getting together a serious schedule to try to fit everybody in. And I have honestly had to take a bit of a break from door-to-door work because I can't handle any NEW studies. *whew!* It's a nice problem to have, right? Yep! As for the other stuff that's going on.... Paola, Gaby and I, (crazy kids) are trying to get a house together... perhaps we'll move in there sometime in October or November... that means I'll be here....... yep... another year!
Now, that's good for YOU because that means you still have a free place to stay for a whole nother YEAR to get your un-tanned american butts down here to Cancun for some good fun in the sun, beach, and service! But unless you just want 100% beach time, it's too hot to just sit at home in an un-air-conditioned house. ::sweating:: Start making plans to head down sometime during September '06 - April '07.

August 18th is the District Convention that we're assigned to. It's in Ladyville, Belize. Another fun trip! But I'm not sure if we're going to be going to that one or not yet.... The rest of Mexico English is assigned to another convention in a state called Queretero. (About a 30 hour drive away) But it's the same weekend! It would be great to go to a different convention because I'd love to meet the friends from all around Mexico and also see some old friends from the US serving in other places, like Matzatlan and Puebla. I guess we'll just wait and see for now....  I'm very excited about the convention "Deliverance is at Hand!" It's great that everyone is invited to this convention this year, I think it was such a wonderful idea from the society and I've heard some really fabulous experiences from the US about it so far. Unfortunately for us, we will not be able to have much of a share with inviting people to attend. Because Spanish congregations cover all the same territory that we cover, so they will leave a leaflet at every home in Spanish. So there really is no point to leave two... and secondly, if we invite people to come to our convention.... heh... well we're either inviting them to come along with us to another country (Belize) or to buy an airplane ticket or drive 30 hours to the one in Queretero. So, you see, it doesn't really work out in our favor! But that's ok because I want to continue to hear YOUR good experiences from the convention and the good results that came from the invitations! Please feel free to leave them as a "comment" in this journal forum or on my message board! Or if you would prefer you can email them to me! I look forward to hearing responses from all of you, and I really appreciate everyone for keeping your eye on me while I'm down here in Mexico. icon_cool My love to everyone... I miss you all!

Spanish Assembly

Today I went to the Spanish Assembly: "Put On the New Personality" (or something to that effect) I haven't had it in English yet, so I don't really know exactly what it was all about.... but it SEEMED really good. hee hee

I went for the 2nd half of yesterday's session and the 2nd half of today's session too. It has been really hard for me to learn Spanish, but I am determined to do it. I just hope that my subconcious mind is learning more than my concious part is aware of.... because it really doesn't feel like I'm learning much. But today I was able to piece together what they were talking about a few times which I was really excited about!

So I'd hear words like "Hermano", "Cuidado", "Diablo", "Romantico", "Con Escuela y Trabajao", "Jehova".... and then I'm like "Oh hey! They're talking about be careful of relationships with people from school or work who don't worship Jehovah!" So, I'm not really getting some great encouraging session, but I am able to put together what they're talking about..... sometimes. Anyway there were 3,600+ people there today which was really cool....and a lot more than I would have thought. And it was outside in the blistering hot sun! WHEW! But that's alright because we had umbrellas and a nice cool breeze... and speaking of breeze.. some of them were huge gusts of wind and my umbrella snapped!!! WHOOPS. hehe

So I listened to a lot of Spanish .... but eventually I got tired of listening and not understanding. I counted the umbrellas. 312. That's more than last time. Then after the assembly a small group of us went and saw a movie.... Ice Age 2! Sweet! Except... it was in Spanish. OW... my brain hurts today! It was really cute but I've gotta see it in English to understand! Ok, so I've got lots to do tomorrow so I'm going to say goodbye. Miss you all!

CAT FOR ADOPTION!

My roommate, Julie and I have been occasionally feeding the stray dogs and cats on our street. Its so sad to see so many of them and they're all just starving. Well we attracted this gang of cats who ate for a few nights then disappeared....except one. This tiny little white and gray cat. She's sooo pretty with bright blue eyes. She stuck around a few more days.
So one day I went out and fed her and I made the horrible mistake to pet her. She was just so cute and soft, I couldn't resist. Well, as soon as i pet her PURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR PURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR PPPPUUURRRRRR. Obviously attention deprived. That little thing hasn't had any love like it needs!! Well,  I did my good deed then turned around to wash my hands.....and *ZOOM* the cat ran into the house! I could almost hear her yelling "I FOUND HOOOOOMEEEEEE!!!!" So I ran in after her and shoo'd her out again.... but she's been STUCK to our front door for the last 4 or 5 days. Every morning I wake up and shes sitting there, every afternoon, and every night we come home she's still there.... every time of the day she's sitting by our front door. We even stopped feeding her hoping she'll go away, but now she meows. MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW. But her meow is so cute and petite its more like "MEW! MEW!" One night after meowing pitifully for like 30 minutes she finally went quiet... and we went to sleep... but Julie got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and the cat saw the light... "MEW! MEW! MEW!" Oh boy!
This morning she started again when she heard me get up. But I just continued to ignore her... until the sound started to get closer and closer... I'm like, where is she at!? I went to the window and realized that she had walked up the steps to my landlords apartment (the ones who dont want the cat around) and shes looking at me like "Let me in or I'm going to jump!" So I yell at the cat "Get down! Youre going to get yourself in trouble!" "MEW MEW MEW!" So I sat back down and continued to ignore her and then all became quiet. A few minutes later I looked up and on the TOP of the window is a tiny white paw swooping down...and then suddenly a little kitty head... "MEW!" I'm like "AHHH!!" the cat had crawled up to the second floor, walked along the ledge and was doing a balancing act on the bars of the windows... she was wobbling everywhere about to fall off but trying to get my attention through the window! AMAZING! So I was suckered in. I ran and opened the door and called her and of course she came running.... I fed her and pet her and now shes curled up on the doormat. She's so smart! When she tried to move from the doormat I clapped my hands loudly and told her no, and she turned right back around, curled up again like she's sayin "ok ok! that's fine. this is a great spot!"
Well, now I have this teeny problem. Because I can't get rid of her and nobody wants a cat. And i'm slowly getting attached to her, but I can't keep her in the house because of my allergies, and my landlords weren't so keen on us feeding the animals because they're starting to use the garden as a litterbox. So I'm in quite a pickle. Does anybody want a cat?????

One of the best movies.... EVER.

You're SICK!

It's 19*f outside, the wind is blowing and you don't have a coat on. It's wintertime and you're late for an appointment so you jump out of the shower, throw your clothes on, and run out the door with wet hair. You go snowboarding and you spend most of your time butt-boarding, your clothes are soaked, you're cold, and the lounge is out of hot chocolate.

What do all of these things have in common?

You're about to get sick because it's COLD out.

   BURRRRR!!!
Now, as for myself, on the other hand, I am not in cold weather. In fact, some days it's downright hot. Wet hair is NOT a problem. Nowhere in the state of Quintana Roo have they ever even seen snow, nevermind 19* weather or snowboarding. So my question is.... Why the heck am I SICK again!!! ugh!

So late yesterday afternoon I started feeling it coming on. At first my scratchy throat, I was attributing it to all the mold and the dust that has been stirred up by the very windy last 2 days we've had. But then things started to get worse and worse. Not to mention there was a party last night that I just HAD to go to. I wanted to see my pal Ashley from Cozumel and hang out. Well, I went, and of course they played music... and swing music! So there was no other choice but to dance!  Needless to say, I'm stuck in bed all day on a Saturday... and probably Sunday too. So, hit me up with a message or comment or something, I'm bored!

It's just not right to be sick in Mexico. Colds are called 'cold' for a reason. Ugh! It's like 80 degrees down here!

Sunny Days

Today is pretty. I stayed up late last night, woke up early for service and spent the morning out. It was pretty hot. But so nice to be out with the brothers and sisters. I got 2 nice return visits and it was just overall a good day. As I was being dropped off back at my home by Tom and the rest of the group, the sun which had been temporarily suspended behind a puffy white cloud peaked out, and the birds started to sing. The big black bird, the one with the beautiful *whoooooop* sound that I love so much that defines Cancun for me. It immediately made me smile.... a grin, really. I said goodbye to my friends and started walking to my house, just a block away... with this silly little grin still stuck on my face. Smiling at what? The sun? The birds? The warm breeze? A happy day? Some things that normally are so simple and rarely seem worth the moment to think about them, and here in this moment, those simple things made me so incredibly happy. So silly, I'm walking home with this content smile and I pass a complete stranger who sees my apparently pleasant look, smiles himself and kindly says "Buenas dias!" ("Good morning!" ) "Yes, it is a good morning." I thought. So good, I had this incredible urge to share it with someone and give them a hug. But alas, I couldn't....Julie left this morning to go to Cozumel with her best friend, Geniveve who is visiting for a week from Canada. And I'm alone for now... but that's ok.... because I have my meeting this afternoon, and I know I'll get lots of hugs then... and at the moment, I'm just relaxing... on my front porch, swinging in my hammock in a breeze. Tough life in Mexico, right? Good Morning to you all!
